Roofing tips and guides
Plain answers to the questions homeowners ask us most.
Repair or replace? How to decide
A repair usually makes sense when
- The damage is in one area
- The rest of the roof is in good shape
- The leak can be traced to one spot
A replacement usually makes sense when
- Shingles are curling, cracking or missing across the roof
- You keep paying for repairs that do not last
- The roof is at or past the end of its life
- Water has damaged the roof boards underneath
A free estimate is the easiest way to find out. Ask for one.
What a good roofing estimate includes
- What work will be done, and what will not
- The materials, by brand and type
- The total price, in writing
- A timeline for the work
- Cleanup and removal of old roofing
- Payment terms
- The company name, address and license number
If an estimate leaves any of these out, ask why.
Asphalt or metal? How to choose
- Asphalt shingles cost less up front and come in many colors and styles. More on asphalt roofing.
- Metal roofing costs more up front and is built to last longer. More on metal roofing.
How long you plan to stay in your home is often the deciding question.
After a storm: a short checklist
- Stay off the roof
- Take photos of the damage
- Keep water out where you safely can
- Call a local, licensed roofer
- Call your insurance company
The full steps are on our storm damage page.
